The Municipality’s ambition is to develop the most sustainable location for businesses, organizations and the general public in the coming years. Arthur van Dijk, alderman of current affairs, stated; “We are born pioneers and want to be seen as such.”

Sustainable enterprise is not about talking but doing and this is where SHARE comes in. As a backdrop for inspiration at this year’s event examples of sustainable initiatives already being undertaken in the Haarlemmermeer, were presented to the audience. For five years now SHARE has yielded new collaborations between companies and generated many ideas.

A couple of speakers gave their views and vision on sustainable enterprise. Trend watcher Adjiedj Bakas highlighted the way in which a crisis can offer opportunities by the way in which innovations often grow out of them. For example in the thirties and eighties many wonderful products were created such as the automobile, the light bulb and computer. He predicted that in the future the way in which we manage our source materials, energy and transport will be a lot different from today’s approach. Natural energy sources will play a far more important role and food will become increasingly provided by city farms.

Professor Klaas van Egmond stated that sustainability will only get a chance if we have a shared view about the direction to take and by bridging any differences we may have between us. A change in our pattern of consumerism, less focus on materialism and the individual will ensure sustainable growth of the economy.
