Sustainable Rockfon ceiling tiles
Sustainability the Rockfon way is a balanced approach between environmental, economic and social factors. This is our guarantee to our customers that we will continue to develop in a sustainable direction. Our goal is to constantly minimise our impact on the environment and to secure the health of all who are in contact with our product while continuing to deliver durable, aesthetic and high performance solutions.
Our stone wool’s primary raw materials are diabase (volcanic) rock and recycled materials.
Diabase rock is the primary raw material used to manufacture Rockfon and Rockwool stone wool products. These stones are a natural resource found in abundance around the world. Indeed, every year, volcanic activity and plate tectonics create new reserves of diabase rock – around 38,000 times more than the entire Rockwool Group extracts. In general, most factories in the group are located very close to extraction sites.
We recycle almost all our production waste internally. Today 95% of our stone wool production is either sold or recycled. The Rockwool process is ideal for recycling. At temperatures above 1500°C, organic residue is burnt off, providing valuable energy which can substitute virgin fossil fuel.
The density of our wool is approximately 30 times lower than the original rock. If 1 m³ stone is expected to weigh about 3 tonnes this would correspond to 1700 m² of a 20mm thick ceiling. Inorganic remnants like residues from the metal industry can also substitute virgin diabase rock. We are constantly looking to increase the use of residue materials from other industries. We have always taken great pride in the fact that our stone wool technology allows us to use materials that others perceive as waste. Altogether, the Rockwool Group factories in Europe recycle 500,000 tonnes every year of waste materials from other industries such as the aluminium industry.
By investing in recycling facilities, the Rockwool Group is reducing the amount of stone wool production waste going to landfill. More than 30 million Euros have been invested by the group in recycling plants during the last two years.
In 2009, the maximum recycled content of a ceiling tile was calculated at 42%. With similar values for the content of renewable diabase rock, the maximum content of recycled material and renewable diabase rock is 84% in a finished ceiling tile. These figures will vary dependant upon the particular tile specification. These impressive figures have been achieved thanks to our unique briquette technology, and our electric furnace which allows us to process and incorporate secondary materials from both internal and external sources into new ceilings.
Product development at Rockfon is not only about developing new solutions, but also about refining existing ones, ensuring optimal durability and performance.
Our product development department regularly screens the materials used in our ceilings in order to reduce our impact.
